It happens to most of us (probably all of us!). You have intentions of getting something done and when you don’t get the desired expectation, you suddenly realize you actually didn’t engage in the specific action to get it to happen. So many examples come to mind and I’m sure you can relate to one or more.
That text message or email you wrote and having waited endlessly for a response, you check your phone or email to see it “sitting” in your draft folder. You set some water on the cooker to boil for tea or to start some meal, you come back a while later expecting boiling water and realize you didn’t turn the knob or strike the match to light it. You think an appliance is on, but it’s not functioning. Then you realize, it’s not plugged into a live socket, or it’s plugged to an adaptor, but the switch on the adaptor is off. You plug your phone to charge and after so long it’s still 12% charged. Yes, you plugged the charger to the phone, but did not plug the charger to the electrical power source.
In the cases outlined above, it may be attributed to maybe forgetfulness, but the point is that we cannot get the desired outcome unless the appropriate action is taken. How often we hear God’s word - we read it, we study it, we hear it from various sources, through different media, we talk about it, we even preach/teach it to others. But it’s not in how much of it we hear or know. The outcome is in the application to daily living. No matter how great a message we hear and how pumped we get at the end of a service, or how excited we get when we read God’s word as a Facebook post or sticker or devotional, there is really no productivity from it until we DO IT!
In a nutshell: The blessings from God’s word are not experienced in the hearing, but in the doing. The outcomes desired and so promised in God’s word are products of faith with appropriate action. God’s word works for those who work it.
47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.
49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” [Luke 6:47-49; NKJV]
To do: Listen to the Word with an intention to do it . . . and follow through - DO IT!
22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.
24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.
25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. [James 1:22-24; NLT]
