Walk In The Spirit

For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:13-21

Be reminded that you are a spirit being that has a soul and lives in a body. Be reminded also that every moment, there are battles raging inside you – battles between the Spirit inside you and your flesh which works in alliance with your soul. The greatest spiritual warfare you must fight and win is this battle that rages between your regenerated spirit and the lusts of your flesh.

The scripture presents an antidote which if applied assures you of constant victory in this battle. “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” (Gal. 5:16-18).

The injunction is: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” The reason the flesh overwhelms your spirit is that you feed the body three times or more daily with physical food that nourishes it and increases its mass. You feed your soul virtually every moment with diverse kinds of information from the radio, television, internet, newspapers; social medial and other formal and informal education. Most of the information are unedifying and weary the soul.

The spirit feeds on a different kind of diet. It is nourished with worship, the word of God, prayer and fasting. When you neglect feeding the spirit, and overload your body and soul, you tilt the balance in favour of the flesh. Walking in the Spirit demands not only that you nourish the spirit, you should also plant your feet where God stands; saying what Jesus should be saying and doing what He should be doing.

• Pray for enablement to mortify your flesh. Fast.

Christ has set me free from the bondage of sin and death. I must mortify my flesh and live.
